Meet our Staff: Rebecca Spalone of Chemung County

Rebecca Spallone (she/her) has been in the human services field for over three decades, first as a case worker and later for the Department of Social Services. While she long had a passion for protecting the environment, it wasn’t until relatively recently that she thought to pursue it as a career.

Rebecca originally joined Cornell Cooperative Extension as an Energy Navigator, where she volunteered her time to advise local residents on ways to reduce their carbon footprint and energy bills. She found the work very rewarding, so when the Regional Clean Energy Hubs were formed and positions opened for Community Energy Advisors, she jumped at the opportunity. As CEA, she’s doing similar work to her Energy Navigator role, but on a much larger scale.

“We are at a point in time where something needs to be done. For those of us that have been sleeping on it, it’s time to wake up, and really all of us have something to contribute, even if it’s something small.”
— Rebecca Spallone

Rebecca believes in the power of small actions to make a big difference, and she enjoys encouraging others to make small changes to greatly reduce their energy burdens. Still, she knows that there are plenty of hurdles along the energy-saving journey, so she’s become well-versed in problem solving. She helps residents find creative solutions to their energy challenges.

In her free time, Rebecca can often be found thrifting all across the region, visiting every rummage sale and thrift store she can find. She said it speaks to her values of reduce, reuse and recycle, which fall right in line with her deep connection to the earth.
